The innervation of dentin the histological approach

, : The innervation of dentin the histological approach. British Journal of Oral Surgery 17(3): 218-226

The histological investigation as to whether dentine is innervated or not has been frustrated by the inadequacy of staining techniques. Experiments to stabilise a technique for the selective impregnation of nerve fibers are described. This technique is applied to the problem of tooth development and innervation of the dental pulp. Interpretation of histological findings suggests that sensitivity of human dentine following instrumentation is due to a reaction centrally in the pulp rather than due to the presence of nerve fibers in the calcified dentine.
