The cytologic and bacteriological study of bronchial secretion was conducted in 92 patients with chronic bronchitis. The cytologically verified exacerbation of chronic bronchitis was an infectious character in 78% of cases (64% of bacterial, 8% of virus and 6% of fungal origin). The infectious character of aggravated inflammatory process in the bronchi was not confirmed in about 1/5 of the patients. Exacerbation of endobronchial infection is attended with typical clinical symptoms in .apprx. 70% of cases.
