The selective importance of allozymes in yeast populations

, : The selective importance of allozymes in yeast populations. Egyptian Journal of Genetics and Cytology 7(1): 108-122

Five populations of Saccharomyces cerevisae were investigated for a period of 30 generation cycles. Two haploid strains of opposite mating types marked by the alleles of 2 esterase loci were used as founders in the populations. The changes of gene and genotypic frequencies could not be interpreted by selective forces acting on the marked gene blocks but interactions with the genetic background had to be taken into account. The results are discussed with regard to the importance of enzyme variants and the unit of selection.
