The variation of egg mass size of the mulberry tiger moth spilarctia imparilis lepidoptera arctiidae

, : The variation of egg mass size of the mulberry tiger moth spilarctia imparilis lepidoptera arctiidae. New Entomologist 31(4): 78-82

The variation of egg mass size of S. imparilis was studied at Nanseicho, Mie prefecture [Japan] in 1978. Maximum and minimum egg mass sizes were 3156 and 436, respectively. The distribution pattern was nearly logarithmic normal distribution. From measurements of fecundity (F), egg mass size (E), forewing length of females (Fw), body length of females (Fb) and weight of female pupae (Wp), the following relations were obtained: F = 406.23Fw.sbd.8232.73 (r = 0.90), Fb = 0.87Fw.sbd.4.08 (r = 0.77), E = 213.55Fw.sbd.3862.6 (r = 0.59), F = 2.33Wp.sbd.62.99 (r = 0.73). From these equations, it is estimated that the females deposited .apprx. 80% of the eggs in the field, and it is concluded that the egg mass size of S. imparilis depends on the body size of females.
