Total replacement of the knee a study based on 180 cases

, : Total replacement of the knee a study based on 180 cases. Revista do Hospital das Clinicas da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Sao Paulo 41(4): 161-166

The authors present a survey of 166 cases of total replacement of the knee joint extracted from a total of 180 arthroplasties performed between 1974 and 1985. Fourteen patients died during such period of time and were excluded from the evaluation. They obtained unsatisfactory results with the hinged prostheses of Walldius and G.U.E.P.A.R. On the other hand satisfactory results were obtained with the nonhinged prostheses of Freeman Swanson and I.C.L.H. Results with the hinged prostheses were good in 40% of cases. Results with the Freeman-Swanson prostheses after a 11-year follow-up were good in 69.8%, fair in 5.7% and poor in 24.5% of cases. Results were good in 80%, fair in 4.7% and poor in 15.3 of cases of I.C.L.H. prostheses after a 5-year-follow-up. They had only 6 cases of non-hinged prostheses other than Freeman-Swanson and I.C.L.H. which did not permit conclusions. Most frequent complications were loosening of the stem of the hinged prostheses, deepening of the tibial component of the Freeman-Swanson and lateral subluxation of the patella with the I.C.L.H. prostheses. The authors stress that all complications were solved through other surgical procedures and that all patients are walking, the great majority without a cane.
