An anther derived new high quality rice variety with disease and insect resistance hwacheongbyeo

, : An anther derived new high quality rice variety with disease and insect resistance hwacheongbyeo. Research Reports of the Rural Development Administration (Suweon) 31(2 RICE): 27-34

"Hwacheongbyeo" is Japonica rice derived from anther culture of F1 plant of a single cross between Suweon 298 and Milyang 64 made at Honam Crop Experiment Station during 1982 summer season. "Hwacheongbyeo" is a medium-late maturing variety and it has medium height average 89 cm tall in culm length. "Hwacheongbyeo" is the first Japonica type rice variety with the resistance to brown plant hopper, and it is also resistant to rice blast, bacterial leaf blight and stripe virus disease. The reaction of cold tolerance, germinability at low temperature and leaf discoloration is similar to Nagdongbyeo. "Hawacheongbyeo" has short and round grain with good translucency, very little white belly and white center and good eating quality. "Hwacheongbyeo" yielded 5.1 t/ha and 4.8 t/ha in milled rice, 2% higher than Nagdongbyeo at single and double cropping area of southern coastal area and southwestern plain area, respectively. "Hwacheongbyeo" is recommended for southwestern plain area and southwestern coastal area of Korea.
