Cardiovascular collapse after administration of verapamil a report of two cases

, : Cardiovascular collapse after administration of verapamil a report of two cases. Revista Espanola de Pediatria 45(270): 511-514

We present two cases of paroxysmal reciprocating supraventricular tachycardia in which verapamil intravenous therapy was unsuccessful showing in addition lifethreatening effects in both patients. The first patient, a 4-months-old female, showed extreme bradycardia and severe systemic hypotension soon after verapamil administration, needing cardiopulmonary reanimation procedures. The second one, a 16-year-old gir, showed several types of arrhythmias of supraventricular origin, and systemic hypotension after verapamil administration. This treatment was unsuccessful to control the reciprocating tachycardia, and the patient needed external electroversion. Verpamil action mechanisms, its effects on heart rhythm and atrioventricular conduction, and its adverse effects were reviewed. Finally, specific recommendations for using this drug in pediatric age were done.
