Clinico endoscopic studies in children with duodenal ulcer

, : Clinico endoscopic studies in children with duodenal ulcer. Problemy Pediatrii 31: 19-26

Ninety six children with duodenal ulcer, 50 girls and 46 boys, 5 to 15 years of age, were studied. Clinical, X-ray and 124 fibroendoscopic investigations were performed. Family history of the disease was recorded in 41.6 per cent of the children. The onset of the disease was usually after the age of 11. Leading symptoms were abdominal pain and vomiting. Ten per cent of the patients had hemathemesis and melena and in two children bulbar stenosis developed after several years' evolution. X-ray diagnosis was successful in 64 per cent. Fibroscopically the ulcer process was most frequently localized on the anterior wall of the duodenal bulbus (in 46.8 percent of the cases), with the posterior wall, small and large curvature of the bulbus and the postbulbar space ranking next in incidence. Nine children had numerous ulcers. In 54 per cen tof the patients the ulcer was in active phase, in 16.6 percent in initial remission and in 29.4 per cent in cicatrization stage. All patients had inflammatory process in the gastric and/or duodenal mucosa.
