Effects of planting densities and nitrogen application levels on grain straw yields and straw quality of brittle culm rice

, : Effects of planting densities and nitrogen application levels on grain straw yields and straw quality of brittle culm rice. Research Reports of the Rural Development Administration (Suweon) 31(1 RICE): 43-48

To evaluate a possible utilization of the straw of rice, two rice varieties, HP1033 (brittle culm mutant) and Taebackbyeo (Tongil-type), were grown under the combined conditions of three planting densities, 72, 92 and 112 hills per 3.3m2, with four nitrogen levels, 10, 15, 20 and 25 kg per 10a. Straw and grain yields of the brittle culm variety were inferior to those of normal one but the crude protein and crude cellulose in straw of the brittle culm variety were found to be much benefit as feed. Straw and grain yields of the brittle culm variety were increased with both the higher planting density and the higher nitrogen fertilizer level. The crude protein in straw of the brittle culm variety was much affected by a large amount of nitrogen application, while the crude cellulose of the straw was much influenced by planting density.
