Effects of starvation and dehydration on body weight cloacal temperature and blood serum glucose to two egyptian birds

, : Effects of starvation and dehydration on body weight cloacal temperature and blood serum glucose to two egyptian birds. Bulletin of the Faculty of Science Cairo University 57(1): 117-140

Blood serum glucose was determined in two Egyptian birds. It was found significantly higher in the semi-desert bird (the kestrel "Falco tinnunculus") than in the field, wading bird (the buff-backed heron "Ardeola ibis"). Both birds were simultaneously exposed to combined starvation and dehydration for 3 and 5 days. The semi-desert bird proved to survive more successfully than the other bird. A large number of the latter bird (heron) could not endure these severe conditions and died on the fifth day of starvation. Starvation for 3 days caused a insignificant change in serum glucose of both birds. But, after 5 days of severe starvation, blood glucose was significantly decreased in case the semi-desert kestrel, while it was decreased in a highly significant sense and by a large degree in the (non-desert) hereon.
