Gonad innervation in echinoderms

, : Gonad innervation in echinoderms. Biologiya Morya (Vladivostok) (3): 51-58

The sex gland in sea urchins and starfishes is innervated by the apical (aboral) nervous system. In holothurians, the gonad is innervated by the ectoneural part. Nerve terminals lie in the gonad wall near the base of the peritoneal epithelium. The presence of the morphological substrate of the peptidergic, monoaminergic and cholinergic systems was established. Their axons form tissue and hemal terminals. The germinative zone of the gonad lacks nerve terminals. It is suggested that on the gonad level neuropeptides and biogenic monoamines may function as neurotransmitters and neurohormones.
