Gonad maturation and hormonal stimulation of spawning in wels silurus glanis l

, : Gonad maturation and hormonal stimulation of spawning in wels silurus glanis l. Polskie Archiwum Hydrobiologii 36(3): 417-429

According to histological studies, under the climatic conditions of Poland, in wels the female sex was found to be the first to differentiate in the 2nd year of life. Males matured sexually in the 4th year of life, and females - in the 5th one; in the latter, the process of vitellogenesis began one year earlier. Histochemical studies pointed to interstitial tissues cells as to the main site of steroid production. It was demonstrated that both - a carp hypophyseal homogenate and a LHRH analogue, by itself, were ineffective for spawning induction. On the other hand, combined injection of pimozide and a LHRH analoque was very effective for this purpose and could be applied for induction of artificial spawning in this species.
