Gonad output in terms of carbon and nitrogen by the cape rock lobster jasus lalandii h. milne edwards 1837 decapoda palinuridae

, : Gonad output in terms of carbon and nitrogen by the cape rock lobster jasus lalandii h. milne edwards 1837 decapoda palinuridae. Crustaceana (Leiden) 59(2): 180-192

Fluxes of reproductive C and N in Jasus lalandii were determined and their effects on the nearshore Benguela system (South Africa) were measured at the individual and population levels. The annual C and N production of ovaries of a large female lobster (carapace length 107.5 mm) is 5.6 g C and 1.3 g N; in contrast, the corresponding output of C and N in seminal fluid of a large male (carapace length: 150 mm) is only 2% of this value. The total C needed for growth and reproduction in the female is only 43% of that required for growth in the male. The female's slower growth is probably due to higher oxygen consumption during the three-month incubation period. The total production of the gonads of all male and female animals in a population off Robben Island northwest of Kapstadt ammounted to 1.25 g C and 0.29 g N per square meter per year. Since the larvae hatch in spring, when the southeast wind prevails, it can be expected that the majority of them drift away from the system. Thus, the C and N output resulting from reproductive processes in Jasus lalandii can only play a minimal role in the nearshore Benguela systems.
