Gonadal anatomy maturity stages and spawning type of the matrinxa brycon cephalus guenther 1869 teleostei characidae

, : Gonadal anatomy maturity stages and spawning type of the matrinxa brycon cephalus guenther 1869 teleostei characidae. Revista Brasileira de Biologia 48(4): 83-844

31 ovaries and 15 testis from 1220 specimens of Brycon cephalus caught between September/82 to April/84, in the lower Negro and Solimoes/Amazon Rivers near Manaus, Brazil, are analyzed to determine gonadal maturation scale and type of spawning. Five maturing stages are determined based on macro and microscopic observations of gonadal morphology. Oocyte development is "synchronious by groups" type which means that B. cephalus is a total spawning species.
