Gonadal function in male patients on maintenance hemodialysis, chronic hepatitis B virus carriers

, : Gonadal function in male patients on maintenance hemodialysis, chronic hepatitis B virus carriers. Acta Medica Iugoslavica 42(5): 383-389

Serum levels of FSH, LH, prolactin and testosterone were determined in 64 male patients on maintenance hemodialysis. Thirty-one patietns were without HB virus antigens, 13 were HBs Ag positive, and 20 HBe Ag positive. The results obtained show a significant increase of the serum FSH, LH and prolactin level, associated with a decreased serum value of testosterone in all three groups studied. The serum prolactin level was significantly higher in HBe positive patients, while no difference in other hormones investigated was found among the groups studied. Since HBe positive patients had the highest liver damage estimated by the increased aspartate aminotransferase activity, the difference in the prolactin level may account for the important role of the liver in this hormone metabolism.
