The effect of oestradiol pretreatment on gonadotrophin releasing hormone (GnRH)-induced oestrus, ovulation formation, viability and level of function of corpus luteum (CL) and cyclic activity was studied in anestrous cows by palpation, serum oestradiol-17 .beta. (E2) and progesterone (P4) profiles and vaginal electrical resistance patterns (RV). All the GnRH-treated cows responded with ovulation CL formation and ovarian cyclicity but a greater proportion (5/7) of E2 pre treated cows compared to non-pre treated cows (2/5) had normal induced cycles with typical serum P4 profiles while the rest had initial short cycles. Injection of E2 alone failed to evoke any ovarian response. The changes in the RV of the vaginal tract of the treated cows mimicked the pattern of changes seen during natural cycles in cows with lowest values recorded on the day of induced or spontaneous ovulation.
