Gonatobotrys simplex and its teleomorph melanospora damnosa

, : Gonatobotrys simplex and its teleomorph melanospora damnosa. Mycological Research 93(1): 67-74

Perithecia of Melanospora damnosa occurred on corn (Zea mays) pith samples colonized from Fusarium subglutinans, casual agent of stalk rot of corn, and Gonatobotrys simplex, a contact mycopatheogen. Single-ascopore isolates of M. damnosa produced G. simplex in culture. Crosses of compatible single-ascospore cultures of M. damnosa gave microconidia-bearing conidiophores, followed by the production of perithecia. Single-ascospore cultures did not produce microconidia. On PDA inoculated with Fusarium subglutinans, 25% of random crosses of single-ascospore cultures developed perithecia. The majority of ascospores germinated on PDA, whereas 6% required thiamin plus PDA, and 2% required biotin for germination and axenic growth.
