Gout and rheumatoid arthritis in the same patients

, : Gout and rheumatoid arthritis in the same patients. Semaine des Hopitaux 67(33): 1497-1500

A patient with both gout and rheumatoid arthirtis is reported. Although both these conditions are common, their simultaneous occurrence has only infrequently been reported in the literature. These combined forms may pose diagnostic problems (since each disorder may mimick the other). Gout is usually the first of the two diseases to develop. The low prevalence of the gout-rheumatoid arthritis combination may reflect a tendency towards mutual compensation of the pathophysiologic mechanisms involved (immunosuppressant effect of hyperuricemia, decreased inflammatory potential of urate crystals coated with rheumatoid factors).
