Graft and mechanical transmission of the rose rosette agent

, : Graft and mechanical transmission of the rose rosette agent. Transactions of the Missouri Academy of Science 21: 81-86

The infectious agent responsible for the rose rosette can be transmitted by drop inoculation or grafting. In the latter case, between 1 and 2 weeks of tissue contact is required for the agent to move into the host. With either method, symptoms develop in 6 to 8 weeks. The infectious agent can be extracted from infected roses by homogenizing leaf and shoot tissue in 0.02 M phosphate buffer, pH 8.0, but infectivity is lost with additional manipulation. Rose rosette has several characteristics of the MLO disorders, including floral phyllody and witches' brooming. However, pleomorphic bodies have not been found in diseased tissue and the disease does bot respond to tetracycline therapy.
