Grain corn responses to five tillage methods under different european corn borer infestations

, : Grain corn responses to five tillage methods under different european corn borer infestations. Agriculture Ecosystems & Environment 30(1-2): 27-36

The response of grain maize (Zea mays L.) yield and maturity to five tillage systems (conventional moldboard plowing in autumn and disking in spring, plowing-disking in autumn, plowing-disking in spring, no-till with strip ridges, no-till on flat beds) under three levels of European corn borer (ECB) (Ostrinia nubilalis Hubner) infestations was evaluated. Both conventional and plowing-disking in spring gave significantly higher yield over 5 years and both practices were less affected in years with dry conditions. Plowing-disking in spring and no-till with strip ridges reduced significantly ECB damage to plants, but no effect was detected on yields from different ECB infestations. The number of days from planting to 50% silking was related to grain moisture at harvest, conventional tillage producing grain with the lowest humidity and thus necessitating less drying. Plowing-disking in spring significantly reduced stalk rot Gibberella zeae (Schw.) Petch infection.
