Hptlc rapid test for detection of asarone acorenone coumarin and thujone in vermouth and spirits

, : Hptlc rapid test for detection of asarone acorenone coumarin and thujone in vermouth and spirits. Lebensmittelchemie und Gerichtliche Chemie 43(6): 126-127

Asarone, aconenone, coumarin, and thujone were separated from vermouth and spirits by extraction with pentane:dichloromethane (2 + 1, v/v) and then separated by high performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) on RP-18 chromatography plates using a methanol:water:ethyl acetate mixture (30+30+75) as mobile solvent. Asarone was detected using UV fluorescence (366 nm); to improve detection of acorenone, coumarin, and thujone, the plate was sprayed with anisaldehyde/sulfuric acid and NaOH followed by examinations under UV light. HPTLC separation of asarone, acorenone, coumarin, and thujone proved to be a rapid and sensitive test which can be used prior to quantitative analysis of these four aromatic substances.
