Jeddah microbiology quality control scheme antimicrobial sensitivity testing for haemophilus influenzae

, : Jeddah microbiology quality control scheme antimicrobial sensitivity testing for haemophilus influenzae. Saudi Medical Journal 12(4): 306-308

The performance of laboratories in detecting antimicrobial resistance of Haemophilus influenzae has been poor. Four isolates of H. influenzae and a questionaire on the methodology used were distributed as part of an antibiotic susceptibiity trial. The results are reported here. Laboratories often failed to detect resistance to antibiotics. For isolates resistant to ampicillin, chloramphenicol and tetracycline the percentages of correct results were 33%, 30% and 45% respectively. It is suggested that laboratories should use lower strength antibiotic discs, standardized inocula, appropriate control organisms and suitable sensitivity testing media.
