The effect of validoxylamine A (VAA), a potent and specific trehalase inhibitor, on the production of non-glutinous eggs in Bombyx mori was investigated. Female adults which were injected or dipped with VAA 6-8 days after pupal ecdysis produced non-glutinous eggs. Non-glutinous egg batches occurred in all the silkworm races tested. Incorporation of 14C-glycine into the glutinous substance on the egg surface was also suppressed by the VAA treatment. Observation by scanning electron microscopy showed that the surface of the eggs laid by the VAA-treated adults was very smooth, indicating that the deposition of glutinous substance was minimal in contrast with the rough surface of the control eggs.
