Quantitative morphometric evaluation of changes in the small intestine mucosa of laboratory rats after gamma and mixed neutron and gamma irradiation

, : Quantitative morphometric evaluation of changes in the small intestine mucosa of laboratory rats after gamma and mixed neutron and gamma irradiation. Acta Universitatis Palackianae Olomucensis Facultatis Medicae 120: 53-61

The quantitative changes of light microscope structure of laboratory rat jejunum observed in the fifth day after a single whole-body irradiation by gamma radiation or by mixed neutron and gamma radiation were compared in dependence to the dose, ranging from 2 to 12 Gy. The post-irradiation changes were estimated according to the method measuring the following morphometric criteria: the height of mucosa and of small intestine villi, the width of villi and of Lieberkuhn crypts, the ratio of outer and inner circumference of small intestine mucosa, the changes of the mean area size and of the shape factor of epithelial cell nuclei of crypts and villi. There was confirmed and evidenced a higher biological effectivity of mixed neutron and gamma radiation when compared with gamma radiation.
