The project "Hyonteiskartoitus/Insektkartering 81", was continued for the eight year during the summer of 1988: observations were made on the occurrence and absence of 21 (+ 3 extra) species of the insects in Finland and marked on 10 .times. 10 km square grid maps. 321 persons (mainly amateurs) participated and returned 4629 observations from 936 of the total of 3852 squares. Maps of the distribution of all target species are presented. The total number of observations encreased slightly from that of the preceeding year. Drastic variation in the number of observations of the separate species occurred because of the very warm and to some extent dry summer of 1988. Agrion virgo, Aglais urticae and Vanessa atalanta increased strongly but Gonepteryx rhamni, Papilio machaon and particularly Nymphalis antiopa occurred in low numbers in 1988. Inachis io also continued to decrease.
