Retrospective study of paraplegics treated for over 25 years at the invalides national institute france

, : Retrospective study of paraplegics treated for over 25 years at the invalides national institute france. Annales de Readaptation et de Medecine Physique 32(6): 773-782

We report the preliminary results of a retrospective study on 338 paraplegic patients injured between the period 1914 and 1962, i.e., over 25 years ago. The study population is divided into 3 groups according to injury date: from 1914 to 1939 (15 cases); from 1939 to 1950 (36 cases); and from 1951 to 1962 (245 cases). The age and the causes of the death have been analysed: besides the usual causes of death in paraplegic subjects, a significant frequency of neoplasias, particulary vesical cancers, was found. In the second part, 31 of the 76 cases histories regulatory followed up at the Invalides National Institution (INI) were examined according to different criteria: social integration and autonomy, deambulation, pains, bedsores, anorectal pathology. Finally, a chapter is given over to the cardiovascular pathologies that are encountered in this paraplegic population. The study involves 50 paraplegic patients and is particularly concerned with high blood pressure, lower limb and aorta arterial injuries, the frequency of which is increased compared to a non-paraplegic population.
