Retrospective study of parenteral nutrition at a general hospital over four years

, : Retrospective study of parenteral nutrition at a general hospital over four years. Farmacia Clinica 7(10): 837-838, 840, 842-843

We have carried out a retrospective study of all the PN prepared over the years 1986 to 1989 from the patient record cards kept up by the Pharmacy Service, which centralizes the PN of the whole hospital. At our general 1400-bed hospital we have gone from 2432 patients with PN in 1986 to 589 in 1989. At the same time, the number of NU prepared has risen from 2.824 to 6.438. In Surgery (50.2% of patients) the hypocaloric and AA + HC + L ones were mostly used, in the ICU (24.4%) and Haemorrhage Unit (6.2%) the HI ones, and in Haematology (6.7%) the hypocaloric ones, whilst in Internal Medicine (12.5%) distribution was varied. We observe the continual increase in this therapy at our hospital, especially marked in surgery patients and for hypocaloric peripheral PN.
