Serologic diagnosis of bovine brucellosis with elisa

, : Serologic diagnosis of bovine brucellosis with elisa. Annales de Medecine Veterinaire 132(7): 565-575

The detection of anti-Brucella antibodies by ELISA was compared to routinely used tests. On the basis of the results obtained in brucellosis free herds, the specificity of the test is 99.2%. In experimental infections, Escherichia coli 0:116 and 0:157, Yersinia enterocolitica, Salmonella urbana and Pseudomonas maltophilia provoked, in a few animals, IgG antibodies cross-reacting with Brucella antigen. In this case, the ELISA titers were lower than those observed in the classical tests. The main advantage of the new test is its high sensitivity which allows an earlier detection of the infected animals. This gain of precocity was observed not only after experimental infection by the oral route or the conjunctival route at low doses, but also in one naturally infected herd followed over a 3 months period. The ELISA test using the lipopolysaccharide as antigen can not discriminate between S19 vaccinated animals and naturally infected animals.
