Size and distribution of dolphin populations in the black sea

, : Size and distribution of dolphin populations in the black sea. Turkish Journal of Zoology 13(3): 189-196

The distribution and the population abundance of common dolphin (Delphinus delphis), harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) and bottlenosed dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) were studied in the Black Sea coasts of Turkey in 1987. The ratio among the species were 52.7 percent P. phocoena, 32.5 percent D. delphis and 14.8 percent T. truncatus. Total abundance was estimated as 454 440 animals. Harbour porpoises and bottlenosed dolphins are more inshore animals than common dolphins. Bottlenosed dolphin lives in the Central and the Western parts of the Black Sea coasts while the others are adapted to all regions.
