Source sink relations in fruits v. pollination fruit set seed number and fruit growth in apple cultivar summerred

, : Source sink relations in fruits v. pollination fruit set seed number and fruit growth in apple cultivar summerred. Gartenbauwissenschaft 54(3): 129-132

Different pollinators were investigated in 'Summerred' Cross pollination gave a good fruit set and more than 5 seeds per fruit. After self or no pollination fruits developed 0-2 seeds per fruit, fruit set varied, but yield was sometimes appreciable. Only a minor, positive relationship between seed number and fruit growth was indicated. Pollination primarily affected fruit growth through effects on fruit set, fruit number and thus fruit/leaf-ratio. Furthermore, fruit growth was stimulated after poor pollination at a heavy blood beyond what the effects on fruit number accounted for, probably due to an increased leaf area caused by stimulated shoot growth.
