The role of groundwaters in the pedological differentiation observed in the amazonian podzol areas

, : The role of groundwaters in the pedological differentiation observed in the amazonian podzol areas. Comptes Rendus de l'Academie des Sciences Serie II Mecanique-Physique-Chimie Sciences de l'Univers Sciences de la Terre 310(10): 1361-1368

Podzols situated in the Rio Negro basin in Amazonia occupy sandy plateaus, where an open and sparse vegetation called campina alternates with the forest. The compina corresponds to giant podzols with very deep alios, while the forest is characterized by podzols with shallow alios. Most of the latter result from the transformation of gaint podzols. It is shown that the podzol with shallow alios, and its related forest, is linked to the permanent high water table. The transformation of these giant podzols and the colonization of the campina by the forest seem to result from a general rise in the level of the local groundwaters.
