Ultrastructure and secondary changes in radiolaria skeletons

, : Ultrastructure and secondary changes in radiolaria skeletons. Paleontologicheskii Zhurnal (1): 28-38

The theoretical and experimental study of the skeletal ultrastructure of modern and fossil Radiolaria made it possible to construct a hypothetical model of the biomineralization and fossilization of Radiolaria silica shells. During biomineralization primary globules of opal are grouped into larger structural skeletal elements, each of which is surrounded by organic lamellae. The fossilization of Radiolaria shells is accompanied by changes in the interrelationships between the organic and mineral components of the skeleton and by silica transformation in the following sequence: globular opal - globular opal-tridymite-prismatic low-temperature tridymite-dipyramidal-prismatic low-temperature quartz. These modifications of SiO2 correspond to the following lithogenesis stages: sedimentogenesis - diagenesis -early catagenesis - late catagenesis.
