Artificial inoculation of 15-day-old plants of the susceptible sunflower cv. EC 68414 with Alternaria helianthi (Hansf.) Tubaki and Nishihara resulted in 100% mortality, which has been noted for the first time. Mortality decreased to 13.3% when 1-month-old plants were inoculated, but drastic reductions in seed yield/plant (95.8%) and oil yield/plant (96.3%) still occurred. Two-month-old plants did not show any mortality when inoculated. Further, they sustained only moderate losses in seed and oil yields. It is suggested that in India sunflower be planted only when humid conditions are unikely to prevail while the plants are still young.
