A novel physical method to control mites and their allergens in bedding

, : A novel physical method to control mites and their allergens in bedding. International Journal of Environmental Health Research 6(3): 233-243

A combination of dry and moist heat generated by the Escort Mediclean equipment was employed to study its efficacy for controlling house dust mites and Der p 1 in crib sized and king sized mattresses that were artificially contaminated in seven areas of each mattress at different depths of wadding and comer foam columns. Mortality of the mites was determined immediately after the treatment and Der p 1 level was determined quantitatively using ELISA on each mite/dust sample. 100% mortality of the mites was achieved at all the sites using dry and moist heat in combination except for the experiment when steam was used alone which did not get 100% mortality (p=0.05). For Der p 1, moist heat, plus a pre-treatment of dry heat, that was introduced into the interior of a king-sized coil sprung mattress using special probes, achieved 97.6-99.5% reductions in all the study areas. This method was found to be the best (p gt 0.01) of all the various procedures used in the study. Dry heat gt 120 degree C by itself could not denature the allergens (p gt 0.005) but was essential to dry off the substrate and heat it gt 100 degree C to ensure 100% mortality of the mites and also to enhance moist heat which was the primary physical agent in destroying Der p 1 effectively. There was no noticeable structural damage to the mattress and it was completely dry after the procedure. This is considered a breakthrough in destroying both mites and their allergens using a physical method and was compared with other existing methods.
