Can a meadow be a health? The concept of meadow as used by Swedish botanists and cultural historians

, : Can a meadow be a health? The concept of meadow as used by Swedish botanists and cultural historians. Svensk Botanisk Tidskrift 91(4): 211-221

The concept of "meadow" as it is used by cultural historians and botanists is discussed. In their definitions, cultural historians focus on man and his management, whereas the botanists focus on plant species, plant communities and abiotic factors such as nutrition and soil moisture. The importance and values of meadows over time is described. Formerly they were seen mainly as a toot for agricultural production, whilst now they are looked upon as a sanctuary for biological diversity. A short review of various definitions and classification systems used by different disciplines is also given. The need for a common terminology to facilitate mutual understanding has become evident for the handling and management of the cultural landscape. A first step towards such integration has been taken in the terminology adopted by the Swedish national inventory of meadows and pastures.
