Cataract surgery on eyes with corneal problems

, : Cataract surgery on eyes with corneal problems. Rinsho Ganka 51(12): 1857-1860, Nov

We reviewed the outcome of cataract surgery on 58 eyes with corneal problems. The series comprised corneal opacity 42 eyes and endothelial lesions 16 eyes including 12 eyes after penetrating keratoplasty. The follow up averaged 20 months. Cataract surgery was performed by phacoemulsification with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation 25 eyes, extracapsular extraction with IOL implantation 31 eyes and intracapsular extraction 2 eyes. No eye showed decreased visual acuity after surgery. Visual acuity improved by two lines or more in 41 eyes (71%). Complications developed intraoperatively in 3 eyes (5%) and postoperatively in 4 (7%). The findings show that fair outcome is expected after cataract surgery on eyes with corneal problems.
