Effect of herbal therapy of experimental lantana poisoning in buffalo calves

, : Effect of herbal therapy of experimental lantana poisoning in buffalo calves. Indian Veterinary Medical Journal 22(1): 65-68, March

Experimental lantana poisoning was induced in buffalo calves by oral administration of dried leaf powder of Lantana camara @ 4 g/kg.b. wt. The animals exhibited all the typical symptoms of lantana toxicity. Herbal treatment comprising of an antidiarrhoeal adsorbent powder, a rumenotoric bolus and a liver tonic bolus, was instituted at 12 h post induction of intoxication. All the clinical and rumen liquor parameters showed a shift towards normal values recorded till 12th day. The blood biochemicals related to liver functions displayed considerable improvement compared to the untreated control. All the treated calves withstood the poisoning for 16 days while the untreated ones died between 7 to 9 days post-induction.
