The effect of halothane or nitrous oxide inhalation for one hour on the ultrastructural and histochemical enzymatic alterations was studied in the liver of eight schistosomal patients. The study revealed that electron microscopic ultrastructural changes occurred in the post-anaesthetic specimen when compared with the pre-anaesthetic one. These alterations are detected in the nuclear membrane, mitochondria endoplasmic reticulum and other cell organelles. Depression in the activity of succinic dehydrogenase enzyme with decreased activity of endogenous peroxidase enzyme was observed in nearly all patients. These results suggest that exposure to anaesthetic drugs can lead to acute toxic subcellular changes in hepatocytes.
