Immunohistochemical evaluation of genetic and epigenetic factors in primary breast cancers

, : Immunohistochemical evaluation of genetic and epigenetic factors in primary breast cancers. Journal of Histotechnology 20(1): 27-30

The acquisition of characteristic growth advantages by cells undergoing neoplastic transformation is in part due to deregulation of normal cellular processes, including proliferation, differentiation, and death. These processes involve numerous genetic and epigenetic factors that affect signal transduction pathways and preferential gene expression patterns, culminating in altered cell growth. We evaluated 3 gene products, bcl-2, estrogen receptor (ER), and p53, which are directly related to proliferative responses of tumor cells in 14 primary invasive ductal carcinomas of the breast by immunohistochemical methods. We demonstrated that bcl-2 and ER immunoreactivity correlate well, whereas there was an inverse correlation of bcl-2 and p53 immunoreactivity. These data indicate a possible temporal order of gene expression during transformation of normal breast cells to malignant tumor cells.
