Immunohistochemical investigation on the developing brain of precocial and altricial bird offspring

, : Immunohistochemical investigation on the developing brain of precocial and altricial bird offspring. Animal Biology 5(2): 35-40

We carried out an immunohistochemical investigation to verify the presence of beta-endorphin, Met-enkephalin, substance P and ACTH during brain development of praecocial and altricial bird offspring. The data obtained indicate for the first time that immunopositivity towards the antibodies tested exists in the brain of birds even during development. The different chronology of the appearance of these neuropeptides and their localization depend on the different modalities of development of the examined species. Moreover, in the pigeon four days after hatching, beta-endorphin immunoreactivity can already be observed in the glial cells adjacent to the plasma membrane of neurons that constitute the mesencephalic nucleus of the trigeminal nerve.
