The "Grande Caricaie", the largest natural lakeshore ecosystem in Switzerland, is located on the south-east shore of the lake of Neuchatel and was formed as a consequence of the first water correction that took place in the Swiss Jura (1868-1888). Place of refuge for numerous rare animal and plant species these wetlands deserve to be protected. In june of 1987 an important inundation due to a series of precipitations flooded half of the terrestrial surface.
