Observations on the natural behavior of the larvae of Hylesia continua alinda Druce (Saturniidae: Hemileucinae) in Coronado, Costa Rica

, : Observations on the natural behavior of the larvae of Hylesia continua alinda Druce (Saturniidae: Hemileucinae) in Coronado, Costa Rica. Brenesia 0(38): 131-135

The behavior of a group of over 100 larvae of Hylesia continua was observed daily on an individual tree of Psidium friedrichsthalianum (O. Berg) Niedenzu (Myrtaceae) in San Antonio de Coronado, Costa Rica (1250 m.a.s.l.). Larvae were gregarious during early stages and rested at the base of the tree during the day. At sunset they climbed to the treetop to feed on the new shoots, returning to the tree base at dawn. Twelve larvae were taken from the population and raised to adult stage.
