Prediction of post-operative refraction in intraocular lens implants

, : Prediction of post-operative refraction in intraocular lens implants. Annali di Ottalmologia e Clinica Oculistica 118(11): 1179-1185

Several studies have compared the accuracy of theoretical and linear regression formulas for calculation of the intraocular lens (IOL) power in predicting the postoperative refraction. The Authors reviewed the refractive data from 100 eyes that underwent IOL implant in the posterior chamber. The IOL power was calculated by using the theoretical Binkhorst formula. Eight-one eyes (81%) showed a prediction error smaller than 1 diopter, whereas only in two eyes (2%) the prediction error was greater than 2 diopters. The mean prediction error was +- 0.65 diopters, and the standard error was +- 0.81 diopters. The Authors regard the Binkhort formula as still efficient, and emphasize axial length measurement and keratometry as most important factors in reducing postoperative refractive errors.
