Properties of strains of potato virus Y-N in North America

, : Properties of strains of potato virus Y-N in North America. Plant Disease 77(1): 87-89

A tobacco veinal necrosis strain of potato virus Y (PVY-N) was detected in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) production in Ontario in 1989. Subsequent surveys of potato (Solanum tuberosum) production in Ontario, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Quebec and of table potatoes imported into Canada from California yielded similar isolates of PVY-N. The host range and serological properties of several of these isolates were compared to a PVY-N strain from Scotland and other PVY strains from the United States (PVY-NN, PVY-MN and PVY-36) that had been reported to cause necrosis in tobacco. These other PVY strains did not belong to the PVY-N strains group, because they did not systemically infect potato cultivars and differed in host range and serological reactions.
