The experimental study of local blood flow and pathologic changes after embolization of portal vein branch with two kinds of embolic materials

, : The experimental study of local blood flow and pathologic changes after embolization of portal vein branch with two kinds of embolic materials. Journal of China Medical University 24(6): 602-604

Embolization of grade 2 branches in the left portal vein was conducted with absolute alcohol and steel coil in 13 dogs. Emulsion granules in different colors were injected into common hepatic artery and portal vein ten minutes, one week and two weeks after embolization respectively. Angiography, calculation of emulsion granules and histologic method were used to evaluate the effects. The effect of absolute alcohol on embolization was directly related to the amount of injected alcohol. Hepatic arterial blood flow decreased after embolization. Degeneration and necrosis occurred at the site of embolized area including both Glisson's sheath of parenchyma. Portal branches were rapidly and completely obstructed by coil, whereas hepatic arterial blood flow increased due to compensation. Necrosis and degeneration rarely occurred.
