The use of a modified zinc protoporphyrin measurement in determining a cutoff for the detection of iron deficient erythropoiesis

, : The use of a modified zinc protoporphyrin measurement in determining a cutoff for the detection of iron deficient erythropoiesis. Australian Journal of Medical Science 19(2): 52-55, May

Zinc protoporphyrin (ZPP) measurement has been gaining attention recently as a test that shows promise in the area of iron status determination. The test is quick, simple and reliable, but has been relatively awkward due to the erythrocyte preparation steps required to remove possible plasma interferants. We found that a modified ZPP procedure (sZPP) greatly reduced the need for the lengthy washing process and gave a high correlation (r = 0.99 to 0.95) to the results of the washed cells, even when high levels of interferants were present. A ZPP level was determined which correlated to the onset of iron deficient erythropoiesis.
