Use of nematocyst morphology for taxonomy of some related species of scleractinian corals

, : Use of nematocyst morphology for taxonomy of some related species of scleractinian corals. Galaxea 11(1): 21-28

Size and shape of a major type of nematocyst in tentacles were compared between two morphs of Galaxea fascicularis and between Stylophora pistillata and S. mordax. Large microbasic p-mastigophores of the hard morph of G. fascicularis had a slender capsule and a less conspicuous shaft than those of the soft morph. Both length and width of holotrichous isorhizas of S. pistillata were greater than those of S. mordax. The present study shows that nematocyst morphology correlates with skeletal characters in these corals and suggests that the two morphs of G. fascicularis and S. pistillata and S. mordax, respectively, are distinct species. Comparison of morphology of a major type of nematocyst in tentacles provides useful information for taxonomy of some scleractinian corals.
