Anatomy of a successful pollution reduction project

, : Anatomy of a successful pollution reduction project. Environmental Science and Technology 34(11): 4A-261A

The successful use of pollution prevention techniques to enhance environmental conditions is discussed. Pollution prevention seeks opportunities to lessen reliance on toxic chemicals, raise efficiency, and reduce waste and emissions via process changes. Many environmental experts expected industry to voluntarily adopt pollution prevention techniques because the techniques save money, but this has not been the case. However, a 30-month collaboration between the Natural Resources Defence Council, the Dow Chemical Company, and a group of community activists illustrates the potential of pollution prevention techniques to generate large reductions in toxic wastes and emissions.
