Dendrites go up, axons go down

, : Dendrites go up, axons go down. Nature 404(6778): 557, 559-557, 559

A paper in this issue by Polleux et al. has provided fresh insights into how dendrites and axons projecting from the cell bodies of neurons manage to grow with the right spatial orientation to make the correct connections. The researchers identified a guidance factor, designated semaphorin 3A (Sema3A), that functioned as a chemoattractant for dendrites that grow from certain neurons. Sema3A was also found to be a chemorepellant for axons growing from the same neurons. This finding brings a unifying element to research on axonal and dendritic guidance and underlines the role of cyclic nucleotides in nervous-system patterning,.
