Do you want to work here?

, : Do you want to work here?. Nature 424: 8-20

Laboratory architects are increasingly designing laboratories in which they hope the physical environment influences creativity. Laboratories were once designed like classroom buildings, with a corridor and frequently windowless rooms down each side. However, this all began to change when vaccine pioneer Jonas Salk collaborated with architect Louis Kahn in the 1950s and 1960s to design a laboratory facility--the Salk Institute-- that was both welcoming and inspiring. Some laboratory designers are now trying to maximize the random encounters between scientists that ignite new directions in research, whereas others are designing facilities whose intention is to function like real neighborhoods, in which workers experience a sense of community within a large building. Possibly more significantly, at least in the long term, architects are also exploring ways of evaluating how architecture influences the human body and mind, and a collaboration between architects and neuroscientists set up this spring is trying to answer such questions.
